An investigation is underway after skeletal remains were discovered in east Cork.

The suspected human remains were discovered at the side of a road by a search dog in Rostellan earlier today.

The area has been cordoned off for a forensic and technical examination.

It is understood one line of inquiry could revolve around a man missing from Cork city since last September.

Kieran Quilligan was last seen on September 1st in Cork city centre.

Gardaí searched farmland and coastline at Little Island for 11 days later that month, however no trace of the 47-year-old was found.
