SIPTU says its members have decided to proceed with industrial action at Aer Lingus and the main Irish airports from next Monday.

The union is in a dispute with the airline and the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) which also runs Cork and Shannon Airports.

It relates to the pension plan of the company.

The High Court is due to hear an application on Friday by the DAA which is seeking to halt the action.

However SIPTU says there is ‘anger and dismay’ among members over the threats, legal and otherwise that have been made by the employers in recent days.

The action will take the form of staggered work stoppages.

The DAA has warned that the stoppages scheduled for Monday could lead to the effective closure of the 3 facilities.

It is thought that the trade union could be sued by Aer Lingus for at least €2 million per day in potential losses if the planned action goes ahead.

In a letter sent to the union yesterday the airline maintained that the row with the union over pensions did not constitute a trade dispute.

Management at the DAA went to the High Court yesterday to try and halt the move.

Speaking on Newstalk this morning SIPTU President Jack O’Connor said “no court in the land would award damages against the union in relation to this action”.

Mr. O’Connor added that public sympathy is not going to count for very much.
