There have been no briefings for members of the opposition on the Government's medium-term plan to tackle COVID-19.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced the roadmap to living alongside the virus for the next six months last week.

However, Sinn Féin say there has been no communication with members of the Oireachtas.

It comes as the Health Service Executive (HSE) is fearful about not being able to deal with a surge in requests for tests, according to the Sunday Independent.

Sinn Féin's health spokesperson, David Cullinane, told On the Record there needs to be collaboration.

"There has been no debate in the Dáil over the last number of weeks on the Government's plan.

"There has been no briefing for Oireachtas members, or for opposition health spokespersons, or for party leaders and I think that's a mistake.

"There was a briefing for some TDs in the capital, I think, as a consequence of the new restrictions.

"But when the Government announced their plan last week, there was no briefing for Oireachtas members.

"We had to push for one and we now have a meeting with the Chief Medical Officer next week.

"But in the early stages of the pandemic... there was weekly meetings between the health spokespersons and the leaders of the other parties in Government to ensure we had a joined up approach".

"The Government has been saying for some time, and indeed the HSE has been saying, that we have capacity to carry out 100,000 tests a week.

"But we've never done it, we've never achieved it and questions are being asked as to whether or not we actually have the capacity in real terms - not just in theory.

"And one of the mistakes I think that the Government made in their plan that was announced last week was that there was no targets whatsoever for how many tests would be carried out a week.

"There was no revised targets, and nor was there any target in relation to turnaround time - which is also of course crucially important."

"What was in the plan this week... was that the Government would recruit 1,200 additional staff - so the first obvious question was why wasn't that 1,200 staff employed last month, or two months ago or three months ago.

"There was a lot of speculation and talk that as we moved into the winter season, we would see a second surge and an increase in levels.

"What we're now seeing is an acceptance that the system will not be able to cope with a second surge.

"If the numbers continue to rise, it will put huge pressures on the testing and tracing capacity".
