Today Sinn Féin has launched its campaign to scrap the Seanada ahead of the referendum.

The party says reform of the Upper House isn't a realistic prospect and it wants the public to vote 'Yes' to abolishing it.

Sinn Fein originally hoped to refer the question of Seanad abolition to the Constitutional Convention however that this is no longer an option.

Finance spokesman Pearse Doherty solidifies this, stating that opportunity to reform the Seanad is gone - and the public should not be confused by empty promises:

The opposition party has also added today that no true republican could support the retention of the Seanad in its current form.

Doherty described how "The cronyism and the elitism that are synonymous with the Seanad has fostered the type of politics that has brought this state to its knees."

It is being claimed by Sinn Fein that elitism, inequality and discrimination is at the Seanad's core due to the election process which only allows a small percentage of the population in Ireland have the right to vote.

The choice of whether or not to abolish the Upper House will be put to the people of Ireland on the 4th of October.
