The former White House press secretary Sean Spicer made an appearance at last night's Emmy Awards.

He appeared on a 'portable podium' - referencing Melissa McCarthy's popular Saturday Night Live impression of Spicer's short tenure in the White House.

In his short appearance, he made light of his infamously inaccurate claim about the size of the crowd that attended Donald Trump's inauguration:

Mr Spicer's appearance received criticism online, however, in the wake of his controversial time as press secretary of the Trump administration:

Saturday Night Live was one of the big winners of the night, with Alex Baldwin picking up an award for his regular impressions of Donald Trump.

The show's regular cast member Kate McKinnon also walked away with a supporting actress prize, for a variety of roles that included Hillary Clinton and Kellyanne Conway.

In drama terms, dystopian drama The Handmaid's Tale was the big winner, taking home five awards at last night's ceremony - including for lead actress (Elisabeth Moss) and best drama.

Other shows that won multiple awards included Veep and Big Little Lies

Nicole Kidman, Donald Glover, Riz Ahmed, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Laura Dern were among the big names to walk away with acting gongs.

While there was disappointment for Netflix with no major awards for their hit Stranger Things, there were wins for shows including The Crown (supporting actor for John Lithgow) and Master of None (writing for a comedy series).
