The search for an Irish climber who is missing on Mount Everest is resuming today.

Séamus Lawless reached the peak of the mountain last Thursday, but has been missing since he fell on his way back down.

According to local reports, a nine-member search team will continue the search effort later this evening.

The Himalayan Times reports that the team is led by Irish mountaineer Noel Hanna and Tashki Lakpa Sherpa – both of whom were part of the group that reached the peak with Mr Lawless last week.

The rescue effort was suspended on Friday amid high winds and freezing weather conditions.

Expedition

Mr Lawless is an Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence at Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics.

He set out on the expedition in a bid to raise funds for Barretstown Children’s Charity, which supports seriously ill children and their families.

Campaign

His family has since launched a fundraising campaign in a bid to raise funds for a team of expert Sherpas to locate Séamus.

They said the insurance company that provided a policy for his expedition is “currently not providing assistance with the search and rescue.”

“At this moment in time we have little to no information about what happened on Thursday 16th May, nor do we know the current location of Shay,” they said.

“It is our priority to locate him and bring him home and we appreciate all the support that can be offered as we face this hugely challenging situation.”

Over a third of the final goal of €750,000 has now been reached.
