Children over the age of nine could soon be asked to wear masks in school, in shops and on public transport.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has said the advice should remain in place until at least mid-February.

NPHET is also urging parents not to host any indoor gatherings for under 12s for the next two weeks.

The group said children should not attend sleepovers, indoor playdates, pantos, nativity plays and communions for the under twelves throughput the 14 days.

All children form third-class up are to be asked to wear masks in schools, while all those over the age of nine are advised to wea them in shops and on public transport.

It is understood NPHET has also recommended the wider use of digital COVID certs for settings where the virus could spread.

While the officials were not specific, the advice could apply to the likes of gyms, barbers and hairdressers.

NPHET hasn't recommended any new restrictions on wider society - instead that will be considered at a meeting next week.

Cabinet will now consider the advice before announcing the decision.
