The Health Minister Leo Varadakar has welcomed the news that the Marriage Act 2015 has been signed into law.
It now needs a commencement order to allow full same-sex marriages to begin within weeks.
It officially makes Ireland the first country to put same-sex marriage in place through a vote of citizens.
It was signed into law by the Presidential Commission last night, filling in for President Michael D Higgins who is continuing his visit to the United States.
The legislation now simply needs a commencement order from the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerlad in order to allow full same-sex marriages to begin.
Speaking to LMFM, Minister Varadkar said it is an important milestone.
