The Samaritans charity is today reminding people all over Ireland that it is here to listen and offer help and support – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Aimed at preventing suicide through the power of human connection, Samaritans provide emotional support to anyone who is struggling to cope, in emotional distress or at risk of suicide.
Last year, the charity responded to nearly half a million calls across Ireland from people of all ages and for all reasons.
According to the charity’s annual report, volunteers answered around 1,200 calls a day, with the most common concerns relating to mental health, illness, isolation, loneliness and family problems.
On average, each emotional support call lasted 28 minutes, with one-in-eight calls mentioning suicide.

New research, recently published by the charity, shows that 84% of people who contacted it felt it provided a safe space for them.
Meanwhile, nearly 80% of callers felt genuinely listened to, and 73% reported feeling supported by the service.

On July 24th, the charity is marking Samaritans Awareness Day to remind people in Ireland that it is the only organisation that is here to listen, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It is also encouraging people to get involved by fundraising, donating, or simply spreading awareness about its services.
You can also support the charity by texting Thanks to 50300.
Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide, with volunteers creating a safe space for human connection that can often be life-saving.
In the quiet moments of human struggle, a listening ear can be the difference between despair and hope.
