Should the salaries of all colleagues be public information?
Would this be embarrassing or would it help people fight for better wages in the office?
In Sweden, employers will soon be obliged to make this information public, as part of the Government’s efforts to reduce the gender pay gap.
On Lunchtime Live, listener Mick was sceptical about the benefits of introducing this policy in Ireland.
“From a voyeuristic point of view, it’d be interesting to know what they’re earning,” he said.
“If I’m honest with you, I think in a corporate environment in the private sector, frankly, I’ve no business knowing what they earn.
“Because I think the danger with that is if I might think, ‘Oh, this guy is earning more than me, it’s not fair.’
“Or, consequently, I think someone else is earning less than me and I’m doing the same job, therefore I might be inclined to work less hard.
“I think it could have a dangerously neutralising effect across the board.”
