The South African Presidency has tonight denied reports that Nelson Mandela's in a "permanent vegetative state."

Earlier, Court papers seen by AFP, said Medics treating Mr Mandela, advised the family to consider letting him go rather than “prolonging his suffering”.

The document, dated June 26, was submitted by lawyers acting for Mr Mandela’s oldest daughter Makaziwe and others in a court battle with another family faction over burial rights.

Doctors tonight said Mr Mandela remains in a critical but stable condition.
