New figures from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) show more than 500 disqualified drivers were involved in collisions causing serious injury or death in recent years.
Data from between January 2013 and March of this year in the Irish Times shows there were 521 such incidents.
However, the RSA says new measures giving gardaí powers to arrest dangerous drivers on the spot are helping to make roads safer.
The numbers come just days after it was revealed that just 40% of drink-driving cases between the District Courts resulted in convictions.
The Department of Justice statistics in show that Kerry courts had the lowest conviction rate at 28%, while Offaly had the highest at 68%.
The figures are in stark contrast to conviction rates in England and Wales - where 97% of all drink driving cases result in conviction.
Of those convicted, just two in 10 had their licence numbers recorded in court for endorsement.
