Gardai have been informed after a toxic gas leak from a ship at Warrenpoint Harbour in Co. Down.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) says the cargo of a ship docked there has got wet and become unstable.

The PSNI says 18 people are suffering from the effects of the aluminium phosphide gas.

9 have been taken to Daisy Hill Hospital and a further 9 are being treated at the scene.

'Keep windows shut'

Meanwhile a 50 metre cordon has been put in place around the vessel.

People in the immediate area have been advised to keep their windows and doors shut while the incident is being dealt with.

The PSNI says that due to the north-east wind blowing residents in Omeath and Carlingford are also being advised to close all windows and doors.

Police and emergency services are at the scene.
