A school in the United States has been evacuated following reports that shots had been fired.

Live images on television news showed students being led from the high school near Portland in Oregon, with their hands on their heads.

Armed police were called to the town of Troutdale, and there are no immediate reports of casualties.

However Oregon State Police tweeted to say that the apparent shooter had been killed.

A number of emergency vehicles surrounded the school, and the facility was placed on lockdown.

Reports say SWAT teams moved from room to room to take students out safely.

Police said the area was secure, and that the situation is contained.
