Police say a suspect is dead after they responded to a report of an active shooter at a cinema near Nashville, Tennessee.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said a man armed with a gun and a hatchet was shot dead by police during a screening of Mad Max: Fury Road in the suburb of Antioch.

He said one person may have received a wound from the axe during the incident at the Carmike Hickory 8 cinema.

Mr Aaron said authorities are trying to check there is no danger from two backpacks the gunman had on him.

WSMV reports that witnesses saw one person covered with blood.

The news station reports the shooting began in the projection room of the cinema.

SWAT teams cornered and shot the suspect on a grassy area outside the theatre, according to WSMV.

Nearby businesses, including the Ford Ice Center, were placed on lockdown as a result of the incident.

It comes a month after a gunman killed two people at a theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana, before taking his own life.

Three years ago a gunman killed 12 people at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado. He could face the death penalty.
