Today would have been Whitney Houston's 52nd birthday, and there's no doubting that she was one of the most talented singers of her generation.

Her voice moved millions of people, and throughout her career, she consistently managed to dominate the charts with songs that have stood the test of time and proved to be all-time greats.

Houston's ability to elevate a simple melody with her stunning voice not only meant that she became a worldwide success, but she also became one of those rare musicians who was appreciated by critics and the public alike.

As a way of remembering her career, here are a few selections of Whitney's finest songs, from number ones and record breakers to some lesser-known gems.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Little or no justification is needed for this song's inclusion on the list, but it's one of the few hit songs that shows Whitney's range to its full extent, in particular as the song closes and she touches some incredible high notes with a flawless falsetto.

It's Not Right But It's Okay

She might have made her debut recrod in the mid '80s, by 1999 she was still well able to produce a hit that soared up the charts in the form of this gem from her extensive back catalogue.

I'm Every Woman

A quintessential song from the diva that simply can't be left off any list of her hits.

How Will I Know

Whitney's self-titled debut album had a slightly slow take off, but when it finally took off, one of the big singles was 'How Will I Know'. This recording features the vocals without the backing track, and highlights not only her stunning range, but the sheer power of her unique voice.

Call You Tonight

2009's album I Look To You showed a Whitney whose voice was changing and getting a little bit lower, but despite that, 'Call You Tonight' shows Houston's range was still impressive, taking what could have been a fairly generic song to a different level.

I Will Always Love You

While Dolly Parton wrote and recorded the original, there's no doubt that Whitney will forever be associated with the song for her 1992 cover of it as part of the soundtrack for the movie The Bodyguard. The song spent 14 weeks at number one, breaking the record at the time (back when people still bought music) and while it has since been bettered, this is perhaps the song that still defines her for most people.
