Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders rejected a political donation to his campaign this week from Martin Shrkeli.
Shkreli made headlines recently when his company Turing Pharmaceuticals bought the rights to a drug that treats toxoplasmosis, which can cause complications for AIDS patients, and hiked the price by 5000%.
After appearing on various news shows to try and explain the increased cost, Shkreli faced huge public backlash and decided to lower the price again.
It emerged this week that Shkreli tried to make a political donation to Sanders' campaign to the tune of $2,700 (the maximum an individual can give) but the offer was rebuffed.
Campaign spokesperson Michael Briggs stated that "we are not keeping the money from this poster boy for drug company greed" and that the money would instead be given to the Whitman-Walker health clinic in Washington.
Shkreli had hoped to meet with Sanders to explain how drug companies set their prices, after the candidate had been one of the most vocal critics of the price hike, but his campaign office has indicated that is something which is not going to take place.
