President Michael D Higgin has warned of the dangers of radicalisation, during a visit to a peace centre in England.
The President was speaking at the Tim Parry - Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace at Warrington, in Cheshire.
The centre is dedicated to the memory of the two boys killed in a terrorist bomb attack in the town in 1993.
Mr Higgins warned that socially isolated people are increasingly invited to turn to extremism as they seek a purpose and an identity - and it is essential to engage with them.
He warned that radicalisation of young people is fast becoming one of the most significant global threats.
Broadcaster and journalist Fr Brian D'arcy told The Right Hook a lot of understanding dialogue needs to take place to deal with the threat of Islamic State:
President Higgins is on an official visit to the UK today.
Earlier today he received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Liverpool.
