The Greek people are going to the polls for the third time this year.

Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras - who called the snap general election - cast his vote this morning.

The outcome of the general election is too close to call, with the left-wing Syriza neck-and-neck with the conservative New Democracy party.

Polls suggest that no party will win an outright majority, making coalition talks likely once the result becomes clear tomorrow.

Alexis Tsipras confirmed he was resigning as Greek prime minister last month, following the country's acceptance of a three-year, €86bn bailout package from creditors.

Judge Vassiliki Thanou has been serving as interim prime minister.

Although Mr Tsipras was only elected eight months ago, several Syriza MPs expressed opposition to the rescue plan - not least because of the punishing austerity measures they will bring.

Mr Tsipras had to rely on opposition lawmakers for the bill on the bailout package to pass.

Announcing his resignation and the snap election during a televised addressed, Mr Tsipras said, "the popular mandate I received on January 25 has exhausted its limits".

In protest against Syriza's acceptance of the austerity-heavy bailout, 25 MPs announced that they would break away to join a new Popular Unity party.
