Berlin took the lead in efforts to deal with the European refugee crisis, by declaring all Syrian asylum-seekers welcome to stay in Germany – regardless of which EU country they had first arrived in.
Germany expects to take in some 800,000 migrants this year alone - which is approximately 1% of its population of 80 million - while Ireland has committed to accept 600 asylum-seekers over the course of the next two years.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has described the crisis as an “exceptional situation” which “is not going to end soon.”
