Police in Colombia have made the largest single seizure of cocaine in the nation's history.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said police uncovered 12 tonnes of the drug concealed underground at four farms near the country's border with Panama.

The region is close to routes used to smuggle cocaine into the US.

He said the haul - with a US market value of $360m - was linked to the 'Gulf Clan' drug-trafficking gang.

The gang emerged following the demobilization of right-wing paramilitary groups in 2006.

Police have been attempting to capture the group's leader, Dairo Úsuga, or 'Otoniel' for years.

The government has claimed that more than 1,500 members of his gang have been arrested this year.

Four people were arrested as part of this latest operation, according to a police statement.

President Santos said police made the seizure with the help of overseas intelligence from "friendly countries."
