Pogues singer Shane MacGowan has been released from hospital.

The 65-year-old was being treated in St Vincent’s Hospital Dublin where it is believed he was recovering from a serious infection.

Mr MacGowan was previously diagnosed with encephalitis - a condition which causes the brain to swell.

His wife Victoria Mary Clarke has been documenting his treatment through social media, often posting pictures of him and visiting friends on Twitter/X.

Yesterday, she wrote after he was discharged, “We are deeply and eternally grateful to all of the doctors and nurses and staff at St Vincent’s, it’s the best.”

Mr MacGowan shot to fame as the frontman of The Pogues, which he fronted from 1982 until they broke up in 2014.

The band’s most famous hit is Fairytale of New York, which for many people is synonymous with Christmas.

Mr MacGowan will celebrate his 66th birthday on Christmas Day.
