A man who rescued a dog who had been missing in the Wicklow Mountains for two weeks says the owners were in disbelief when they heard she had been found.

Naoise went missing while on a family walk after she ran after some deer.

A couple who were walking on Lugnaquilla at the weekend came across the eight-year-old golden retriever.

They managed to carry her down the mountain and contacted the Ash Animal Rescue Centre, who located her owners and returned her home.

Jean-François Bonnet carried Naoise down the mountain on his back.

He said his girlfriend Ciara first spotted the dog in distress.

Jean-François explained: "We were almost at the top when my girlfriend screamed 'There is a dog, there is a dog!'

"And that poor thing was curled up against a rock, she was petrified [and] freezing cold.

"She didn't even have the energy to bark or stand - so we covered her in our spare clothes, we gave her some food and we started going down the mountain".

"She was too weak to walk, so Ciara helped me get her on my shoulder and we started going down the mountain.

"It's really steep up there and it's quite icy and snowy [with] lots of rocks.

"So we actually fell down a few times - so Ciara used a scarf to put her in a sort of little hammock, and she strapped her to my backpack."

He said Naoise's owners could not believe it when they got in touch.

"They had been looking for the dog for the past two weeks.

"They actually hired drones to go up the mountain and try and find her, and through that Facebook post we got a phone number and called them - and they were in complete disbelief".
