In small Irish villages and towns, in the centre of cities, Ireland’s asylum seekers wait.

The typical application for refugee status takes over two years to process: 25 months, according to the latest figures for 2016.

In the meantime, families scrape by on meagre weekly payments – €19.10 per adult and €9.60 per child – with no access to employment or social housing.

Some 4,250 asylum seekers now live in 35 accommodation centres across the state.

The majority are run by private companies who receive government funding to the sum of around €50 million a year.

The Reception and Integration Agency, which oversees the system, has been reluctant to provide recent figures, however, for the level of funding provided to individual companies.

Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald said earlier this month that it was “not considered prudent” to release any further breakdown, because of the ongoing tender process for services at the state-owned centres.

Department of Justice data previously released to Independent TD Maureen O’Sullivan showed that the company operating the Mosney centre in Meath received €89.5 million for providing accommodation to asylum seekers between 2000 and 2010.

Among the other highest-earners were Canadian firm East Coast Catering, which was paid €78 million, and the Roscommon-based Bridgestock, which took in €50.3 million.

While current funding levels are difficult to gauge, what is available are up-to-date figures for the number of asylum seekers living in each centre.

Information provided to Fianna Fáil TD Jim O’Callaghan last week, combined with a publicly-available list of current contractors, is laid out in full here:
