The total is in the region of €34m.

Payments to a further 200 former staff at Waterford Crystal are still being processed and will be made in coming weeks.

It follows a landmark case taken to the European Court of Justice by the Unite Trade union on behalf of the workers in April last year.

In its ruling, the ECJ said that Ireland has not fulfilled its obligations under an EU directive, designed to protect the pensions of workers in the event of the insolvency of their employer.

Commenting, the union’s Ireland Secretary Jimmy Kelly said: “The payments made to our members today mark the final step in a long battle for pension justice."

He also confirmed that all remaining claims will be processed in the coming weeks.

The Waterford Crystal factory closed in 2009 leaving more than 1,700 people without their pension entitlements.
