If you're Irish, chances are your mam and dad brought you to the Galway Arts Festival at some stage or another.

You fought with your big sister in the back of the car on the way there, but when you finally arrived you were treated to ice-cream, crisps and cool outdoor performances. You were even allowed stay up late at night, but only if you didn't bother your parents at the bar.

This year's festival has just started, so we've trawled through the lengthly programme and chosen a few events you really should think about heading along to.

Tickets for all of the events listed below are still available.

Whose line is it anyway? (July 26th, 9pm)

A live version of Channel 4's classic improvised comedy show where "five brave performers arrive with no script and not the faintest idea of what will happen". Just like the TV show the event will consist of whole sketches and comic dramas, all made up on the spot by special guests Stephen Frost, Andy Smart, Steve Steen, Ian Coppinger and Greg Proops.

Les Pepones - The Flying Trapeze (July 20th and 21st, 4pm)

Described as a "breathtaking comic tale with astonishing acrobatics, swings, catches, hangs and somersaults - all choreographed to a fantastic musical score inspired by the silent movies of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin," this event looks like it'll be quite the spectacle.

Any Day (July 20th and 21st, 12 and 3pm)

A traveller arrives in Galway looking for somewhere to place his home, which happens to be a trampoline. "Catalan trampoline master Max Calaf Seve mixes extreme physical theatre and touching humour as he flies high into the sky."

Grizzly Bear & The Strypes (July 19th, 7.30pm)

An indie rock band from New York, Grizzly Bear have celebrity fans like Jay Z, Paul Simon and Radiohead. The band incorporates psychedelic pop, folk rock and the experimental with lush vocal harmonies to create songs like 2009's While You Wait for the Others:

The band will be supported by Ireland's own (and particularly Cavan's) The Strypes, four young fellas who made their debut at a primary school Christmas concert not so many moons ago (we assume).

Here's one of our favourite tracks from the lads:

Glen Hansard & Damien Dempsey (July 25th, 6.30pm)

The Frames' frontman and fellow Irish legend Damien Dempsey? Enough said.

David O' Doherty (July 24th, 11.15pm)

Dublin-born Doherty is a comedian like no other. Armed with his trusty, tiny electronic keyboard he describes his style of comedy as "very low energy musical whimsy" – or "VLEMWy," for short. Here's what we think is one of his best performances:

Are there any events you're heading along to that we should know about?
