David Harvey was joined by Larry Donnelly, Law Lecturer at NUI Galway, and Terry Prone of the Communications Clinic for a look at this week's Sunday papers - despite some Ironman-related traffic restrictions making it a challenge to reach the Newstalk studio!
The first story discussed was The Sunday Independent report that the Government is looking to target the 'grey vote' with a €5 pension hike.
"I do think there has been a myth about older people, that said 'ah sure they're grand and they're rich'," Terry observed. "There were ads saying... 'do you not want to go to Saint Tropez for a bit?' In fact older people have been the saviour of a generation, but it's been tough. I would figure it would be very good news - even a fiver a week would made a difference."
She added, "it isn't cynicsm to try and rescue an economy from a situation where it is on its knees... Why shouldn't older people benefit from the upturn in the economy?"
Larry weighed in that "I think there's an objective case for increasing the old age pension, it's been a number of years since that happened. But at the same time it's also good politics, there's no question about it. Old people do vote.
"One of the things that makes it especially good politics is that it won't be subject to, in my view, to the same extent of criticism of 'oh, this is auction politics etc...'. The Opposition will be a little bit loathe to kick the Government or Taoiseach for wanting to give older people an extra fiver a week," he added.
Other stories dicussed included The Sunday Times front page story that former Fine Gael spin doctor Frank Flannery has said that 'Dail's absolute privilege tramples on rights', and The Sunday Independent article on the appointment of judges. The latest developments from Donald Trump's presidential campaign in the US were also highlighted.
