The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ireland's intensive care units has fallen to nine - the first time the number has been in single digits since early March.

It's down from a peak of over 160 patients in early April.

As of last night there were three confirmed cases being treated in ICU in the Mater Hospital, two in both Tallaght and Beaumont, and one in both Cork University Hospital and Mercy Hospital.

The number of confirmed coronavirus patients in the country's hospitals also continues to fall, and was down to 31 as of 8pm last night.

The Mater in Dublin continues to have the highest number of confirmed cases, with nine people currently being treated.

They were also the only hospital to have a new confirmed case admitted in the past 24 hours.

Yesterday evening, the Department of Health confirmed five new cases of the virus, bringing the total since the pandemic began to 25,396.

Six deaths were also reported yesterday, bringing the toll since March to 1,726.

It's expected the Cabinet will today approve the move to phase three of the reopening plans from Monday, with face coverings also expected to be made compulsory on public transport.
