The new governor of California had an unexpected stage invader during his inauguration speech... his two-year-old son.
Gavin Newsom formally took over from his predecessor Jerry Brown yesterday, following a comfortable victory against Republican candidate John Cox in November's mid-term elections.
In his inauguration speech on Monday, the new governor took the time to highlight his policies - including a pledge for guaranteed health care for all Californians, and efforts to reduce overcrowding in prisons.
He also voiced opposition to Donald Trump and "corruption and incompetence in the White House".
However, Newsom found himself dealing with an unexpected disturbance when his two-year-old son Dutch arrived on stage clutching a blanket.
The new governor picked up his sleepy son and continued with his speech.
Referencing the ongoing partial federal government shutdown, Newsom noted: "All kids, not just the children of a governor and a filmmaker, should have a good life in California... Not ripped away from their parents at the border... not left hungry while politicians seek to pour billions into a wall that should never be built."
However, when he finally put Dutch down again the toddler began wandering around the stage - and receiving some enthusiastic cheers and laughs from the gathered crowd.
Newsom himself joked: "This is exactly how it was scripted."
After a few minutes on stage, Dutch finally returned to the rest of his family in the audience.
