It is ‘never acceptable’ for fans to leave a game early because their team is losing, according to Newstalk’s Shane Coleman.

A new YouGov survey in the UK has found the Premier League teams with the worst reputations for leaving when their losing.

The survey of 1,300 football fans found that almost one-in-four left at least one game early last season.

Beating the traffic was the number one reason fans gave for leaving (35%), with another 30% admitting they left in disgust because their team was getting trashed.

On The Pat Kenny Show this morning, Bohs fan Shane Coleman said leaving early is never acceptable.

“I’ll give you an example,” he said. “Last year, Bohs were playing an important cup game against local rivals Shels in Tolka Park .

“We went with great hopes; we had beaten them a couple of times that season – they absolutely walloped us 3-0. We were terrible; we were awful.

“There was no coming back in this. There are some games where you know you might come back but there was no coming back from this.

“I turned around to my kid and said, ‘we’re staying until the end’.

“It is a couple of things. It is about solidarity with your team. You win together, you lose together, you stay there. You take you whooping I suppose.

“Also, from my kids point of view, it is important to know how to lose as well and to lose with a bit of class and a bit of dignity.

“It was horrible and the Shels fans were understandably taunting us and it was miserable – but that is part of sport and that is part of supporting a team.”

The list of team with the worst reputation for fans leaving is:

  1. Man Utd
  2. Arsenal
  3. Man City
  4. Spurs
  5. Chelsea
  • Everton
  • Liverpool
  • Crystal Palace
  • Fulham
  • West Ham
  • Aston Villa
  • Bournemouth
  • Brentford
  • Burnley
  • Luton
  • Newcastle
  • Nottingham Forest
  • Sheffield United
  • Wolves

While there is a clear distinction in the top five, Everton and Liverpool are joint-sixth, with Crystal Palace, Fulham and West Ham equal in seventh.

The other nine teams are all equally ranked.
