Gardaí have again urged motorists to slow down after a motorcyclist was caught doing nearly 200 kilometres an hour in Westport, County Mayo yesterday.

It was one of 476 incidents where drivers were caught driving over the speed limit across the country on December 27th.

Notable incidents included:

  • 122 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, R810 Mount Brown, Dublin 8
  • 109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, N25 Cloncoskoran, Dungarvan, Waterford
  • 116 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, R446 Ballinasloe, Galway
  • 198 km/h in a 100 km/ zone N5, Drummindoo, Westport, Mayo (motorcycle)

In total, more than 100,000 vehicles were monitored by safety cameras.

Gardaí say that while the vast majority of motorists drive responsible, there are many who are not.

Assistant Commissioner David Sheahan says 'mindless' speed puts everyone's life at danger.

He observed: "The most startling [incident] was a motorcyclist that was detected in Mayo doing 198 km/h - that's pure mindless on the part of that driver.

"One error by him not only puts his own life in danger, but certainly puts the lives of other people using the roads in danger."

He added that he hopes that the number of road fatalities will remain below 2017's figures, noting: "As of this time this year, 149 people have lost their lives in road traffic [incidents]. That's seven less than this time last year."
