A three-year-old boy who went missing with his mother for more than two weeks is now "safely back" in the care of his father.

Rebecca Minnock, 35, went on the run from her home in Highbridge, Somerset, with Ethan for 17 days after a court ruled that her son should live with his father, Roger Williams.

She surrendered to police in Oxford on Friday evening. Miss Minnock and Ethan were found "safe and well" and police said they would now receive "the support they need".

Mr Williams said on Saturday morning: "Ethan is safely back in my care now."

A police spokesman said no arrests had been made, adding: "This will be a matter for the family courts now."

Judge Stephen Wildblood QC, the High Court judge dealing with the case, confirmed there will be a hearing at Bristol Crown Court on Monday.

Shortly before Miss Minnock handed herself over, when asked by a Daily Mail reporter why she was preparing to surrender, she replied: "I feel my time has run out now.

"I've heard today my mum's been taken to court. I know it's not fair to Ethan to keep running with him. He needs to go home. He needs his routine back."

On Friday, her mother Louise was jailed for 10 days for lying about the pair's disappearance while the elder woman's partner Andrew Butt received 28 days for telling police a "pack of lies".

The 35-year-old said in the interview filmed by the Mail that she was hoping the authorities would be "sympathetic" with her case and was "hoping somebody will be able to help us to get this case looked into again".

She added: "I am hoping and praying they (the authorities) have seen the support I have and they know I'm a good mum and will possibly re-look into this case and look at all the facts."

Ms Minnock said she hoped she and Ethan would be together and "live our lives like any normal family would".

She admitted she felt like a fugitive when she saw the news about their disappearance and "honestly didn't realise it was going to go this far".

Ethan has been asking to see her family and wanted to go back to his own bed at home in Somerset and play with his toys, she said.

Ms Minnock also told the paper that they "had a lovely time together" and have been "absolutely fine".
