The British government has proposed creating two lines of customs posts on either side of the border as part of its plans to replace the backstop.

Documents given to the European Union and seen by RTÉ News would mean customs posts north and south, but set back some distance from the physical border.

However Tánaiste Simon Coveney has branded the plan a "non-starter" - adding that the EU needs "a serious proposal" from the UK.

Emergency planners across Ireland have been put on storm alert as Hurricane Lorenzo tracks towards Ireland.

Officials at the Department of Housing have told emergency managers across the country to monitor weather forecasts and be ready to activate local plans.

No category 5 hurricane on record has ever made it so far north or east in the Atlantic.

A man's risk of developing cancer is almost 25% higher than a women's, while their risk of death from cancer is over 30% higher.

Figures from the National Cancer Registry's annual report show 43,000 cancers were diagnosed here each year between 2017 and 2019 - with 24,000 of those invasive cancers.

The disease remains the most common cause of death despite improved survival rates - with lung cancer accounting for the highest number of cancer deaths in both men and women.

The personal lawyer of US President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, has been ordered to hand over documents as part of an inquiry.

Democrats want to put Mr Trump on trial over claims he pressured Ukraine's leader to investigate his political rival Joe Biden.

They want to see papers about Mr Giuliani's interactions with Ukrainian officials.

The number of workers in Ireland over-55 has doubled in the past two decades.

They now make up almost 20% of the workforce, up from 10% in 1998, according to the ESRI.

It says demographic change and increased employment rates are factors in the increase, with the self employed and those working in administrative roles tending to work longest.
