The average rent has hit a new record high of over €1,400 a month.

According to the latest rental report from Daft.ie, rents rose by 5.2% around the country in the first nine months of the year.

It means Irish renters are now paying around €660 a month more than they were in 2011 – with rents hitting new record highs in every quarter for the last three-and-a-half years.

Dublin 4 remains the most expensive place in the country to rent at around €2,500 while Leitrim is the cheapest.

Cocaine worth more around €1.4m has been seized in Drogheda.

Gardaí said they found 20kgs of the drug after stopping a searching a vehicle at the Donore Road Industrial Estate.

Investigators carried out the searches as part of an intelligence-led operation.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene is being held at Drogheda Garda Station.

A decision on whether to lift the boil water notice affecting over 600,000 people in the Greater Dublin Area will be taken today.

The second boil water notice to be issued for the area in recent weeks has now been in place for eight days.

Water samples were taken over the weekend and again yesterday, with more expected to be taken this morning.

Officials will examine the results this afternoon or evening before making a decision.

Gardaí would have the power to detain Lisa Smith if she is deported from Turkey, according to a security analyst.

Two Irish nationals involved with ISIS are being processed for deportation but no names have been released yet.

A Defence Forces team was recently sent to the region in a bid to bring Smith and her young daughter home.

The second person may be the wife of a naturalised Irish citizen, who Smith shared a tent with in an Islamic State camp.

Alcohol ads will be banned from public transport and near schools from today.

They will also be banned from any area within 200 metres of a crèche or local authority playgrounds – and in cinemas, except at over-18s films.

It is one of a series of measures included in the Public Health (Alcohol) Act.

The Health Minister Simon Harris said the new regulations aim to “remove alcohol advertising from the day-to-day lives of our children.”
