Morning top 5: Number of new COVID-19 cases falls below 100 for first time since March

The number of new COVID-19 cases reported yesterday was the lowest in two months.

There were 92 new cases confirmed yesterday evening, bringing the total number here to 24,048.

15 more coronavirus-related deaths were also reported yesterday evening, meaning 1,533 have now died in the Republic since the pandemic began.

People are being reminded to keep their distance from each other when tourism sites reopen.

Some beaches and mountain walks are opening again tomorrow under phase one of the COVID-19 restrictions being eased.

Failte Ireland's reminding the public to keep within 5 kilometres of their home and abide by social distancing.

Barack Obama has criticised some of the officials overseeing the US government's response to the coronavirus outbreak.

In an online address to college graduates, the former president did not mention anybody in the Trump administration by name.

However, he said the pandemic had "torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they're doing... a lot of them aren't even pretending to be in charge".

DIY chain Woodie's has reversed a decision to ban children under 16 from its stores.

The company's shops are due to reopen tomorrow, but had initially said young people would not be allowed over social distancing concerns.

After criticism of the decision, Woodie's has now changed its position - saying children will be welcome with an adult.

Opposition politicians in the UK have written to the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, saying they back an extension to the transition period.

Members of the SNP, Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and the Greens are among others who've told Michel Barnier that national governments should be focused "solely" on combating coronavirus.

It's feared the UK may leave without a deal if an agreement isn't reached, but Boris Johnson has ruled out an extension beyond the current December deadline.
