A cyclist has died after he was hit by a Luas tram in Dublin.

Gardaí said it happened on Charlemont Bridge at Peter’s Place at around 3am this morning.

The Charlemont stop is between Harcourt and Ranelagh on the Green Line.

The tram was operating as part of the Luas Christmas Night Service.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been removed to the City Morgue in Whitehall.

New footage has emerged showing Fianna Fail TD Lisa Chambers casting votes on behalf of a colleague in the Dáil.

The Sunday Independent reports that she recorded seven votes while sitting in her party colleague Timmy Dooley's chair last January.

Deputy Dooley has said he was in the chamber at the time - with Dáil records also showing he was present in Leinster House.

Deputy Chambers has already apologised to the Dáil after it emerged she voted on behalf of her colleague Dara Calleary – insisting it was an honest mistake.

The Hallmark Channel has come under fire after it scrapped wedding commercials featuring two brides kissing.

Wedding planner Zola submitted six ads to the channel, four of which featured a lesbian couple.

Hallmark removed them following a complaint from US Conservative group One Million Moms – but decided to allow the two ads featuring straight couples.

The brand said it does not want to “generate controversy,” adding “we have tried very hard to stay out of it.”

Ellen DeGeneres and actress Sandra Bernhard are among the celebrities criticising the decision.

A person injured following a volcanic eruption in New Zealand has died in hospital, taking the number of confirmed deaths to 16.

At least 19 other people remain in hospital following Monday's eruption on Whakaari or White Island.

It comes as recovery teams failed in their latest efforts to locate two remaining bodies.

Authorities say they are committed to recovering the pair and will continue the operation.

A woman remains in critical condition after a serious assault in Wicklow yesterday morning.

She was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin after she was allegedly assaulted at a house Arklow in the early hours of the morning.

Gardaí are continuing to question a man in his 30s who was arrested yesterday evening.

He is being held at Wicklow Garda Station, where he can be detained for up to 24 hours.
