Boris Johnson has written one letter to the EU asking for a Brexit extension - and another saying he doesn't want one.

He was legally compelled to ask for an extension, after MPs voted for another delay instead of backing his deal yesterday.

Laws previously passed in the House of Commons called for an extension request until 31st January 2020 in a bid to avoid a crash out exit this month.

There are calls for further clarity from Fianna Fáil over what happened during Dáil votes last week.

Clare TD Timmy Dooley's vote was cast by his colleague, Limerick TD Niall Collins last Thursday, while Deputy Dooley wasn't in the chamber.

The Ceann Comhairle has asked the Clerk of the Dáil to prepare a report on the conduct of the votes.

Fine Gael has just edged ahead of Fianna Fáil in the latest opinion poll.

The Sunday Times/ Behaviour and Attitudes October poll shows Fine Gael is up three points to 29%, while Fianna Fail's down one to 28%.

Sinn Féin's dropped four points to 16%, while the Green Party is up one point to 6% and Labour's risen two points to 5%.

The poll was carried out from October 3rd to 15th in a series of in-home interviews with a sample of 931 Irish voters.

Donald Trump has abandoned plans to hold the next G7 meeting at his own golf resort in Florida.

In a rare u-turn, the US president said his administration will "immediately" begin searching for another site - after being accused of abusing his position.

He has tweeted about his decision, blaming the "media and Democrat crazed irrational hostility".

The President and Defence Minister have returned to Ireland after being evacuated from their hotel in Beirut yesterday.

President Michael D Higgins and Minister Paul Kehoe were brought by helicopter to Beirut airport over security concerns at local demonstrations in the Lebanese capital.

The President and the Minister visited Irish troops serving in south Lebanon, but they had to cancel the rest of their trip.

They were flown back to Ireland last night.
