Morning top 5: Exercise limit extended to 5km; FF, FG and Green leaders to meet today

Some of the coronavirus restrictions in place are being eased slightly from today, but people are still being urged to stay at home wherever possible.

People are now being allowed travel up to 5km from their home for exercise - an increase from the previous limit of 2km.

Meanwhile, older people who have been cocooning are being told they can now leave their homes for exercise, but only if they stay away from other people.

16 more people have died from COVID-19 in the Republic, bringing the death toll to 1,319.

A total of 21,772 people have tested positive for the virus, after 266 new cases were confirmed yesterday evening.

The figures were released after the HSE has recorded the lowest daily number of COVID-19 patients in Ireland’s hospitals for roughly three weeks.

It's after the Greens' parliamentary party decided on Sunday to try to form a coalition with the two parties.

The HSE is advising people that wearing gloves while doing their shopping or out and about during the pandemic often doesn't help and can even cause problems.

Today marks Hand Hygiene Day, and the Executive is driving home the message of the importance of people washing their hands properly.

Department of Health research shows 96% of people are washing their hands more often because of COVID-19.

HSE Lead for Antibiotic Resistance and Infection Control Professor Martin Cormican says cleaning hands is one of the key factors in protecting yourself from infection.
