The House of Commons has rejected Boris Johnson’s second attempt to trigger an early general election in the UK.

The vote came just before Parliament was suspended for the next five weeks.

Opposition parties said they would not agree to an election while the threat of a no-deal Brexit remains.

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he will now attempt to reach a new deal with the EU – and is continuing to insist he will take the UK out on October 31st with or without a deal.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will hold the first talks on Budget 2020 today.

The plans, due to be announced by the Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe on October 8th, are expected to be more conservative than initially hoped due to the threat of a no deal Brexit.

Carbon taxes, a first-time buyers grant and greater controls on health spending are expected to be discussed.

Police have been attacked with petrol bombs while carrying out searches in Derry.

Around 80 officers were involved in the searches in Creggan area of the city.

The searches followed the discovery of a mortar bomb in Strabane on Saturday.

Police said “significant numbers” of young people took to the streets throwing petrol bombs at PSNI vehicles.

At least two young people suffered burn injuries as a result.

The funeral of Nóra Quoirin will take place in Belfast later today.

More than 7,600 people received opioid-substitution treatment in the first six months of this year.

In the vast majority of cases, this is used to treat heroin-addiction.

5,200 men and 2,400 women were prescribed methadone and other opioid-replacement drugs in pharmacies.

According to details released under the Freedom of Information Act, most cases were in Dublin, followed by Cork and Limerick.
