California has been hit by the strongest earthquake to hit the region in 20 years.

The 7.1 magnitude quake struck on Friday night and centred on the town of Ridgecrest in the Mojave Desert, where a 6.4 magnitude quake struck on Thursday.

Offices in downtown Los Angeles shook for around 30 seconds and the rumble was also felt in the Hollywood Hills, Las Vegas and parts of Mexico.

Officials said there have been "multiple injuries and multiple fires" but that it appeared that no buildings had collapsed.

An apartment in Cork City will remain sealed off for the weekend as Gardaí investigate the death of a two-year-old girl.

The child died in hospital after emergency services were called to the apartment yesterday morning.

Investigators said she was found with serious injuries and they are treating the death as suspicious.

Gardai have yet to release details of a post-mortem examination which was carried out yesterday.

The number of adoptions in Ireland has decreased by 35% over the past five years.

According to the Adoption Authority of Ireland, there were 112 domestic adoptions in 2014.

But this fell to 72 last year – with only 34 in the first six months of this year.

Fianna Fáil's spokesperson on children, Anne Rabbitte said the figures are concerning and called for a review of the effect of new laws introduced two years ago.

Champion Limerick boxer Kevin Sheehy is being laid to rest today.

The 20-year-old was killed in a hit-and-run in Hyde Road in the city on Monday night.

A man has been charged with his murder.

Mr Sheehy's funeral Mass will take place this morning in Holy Family Church, Southill, at 11am.

He will be buried afterwards in Mount Saint Oliver Cemetery.

Thousands of people are taking part in the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle today.

Ireland’s largest single-day fundraising event, it has raised more than €15m for 150 Irish charities in the past 36 years.

The cycle got underway at 7:30am this morning.

Chairperson Bridget McGuire said completing the ring is remarkable accomplishment and it's always a unique day out.
