A total of 1.8 million emergency calls were made in Ireland last year.

The annual report of the emergency call answering service ECAS - which is responsible for dispatching 112 and 999 calls to the relevant service - shows a 2.6% rise in the number of calls it received in 2017.

The service handled 150,000 calls per month.

The highest number of calls was received at the height of Storm Ophelia, with more than 9,000 calls made on Tuesday October 17th.

That afternoon, 218 calls were received over the course of just 15 minutes

Minister for Communications, Denis Naughten, praised operators of the service for providing the first "reassuring voice to people in their time of great need".

He observed: "This responsibility requires calmness and clarity under very difficult and often highly emotional circumstances.

"Behind every emergency is a first call for help so let us not forget those who are responsible for answering that call."

This year marked the first rise in the number of calls after years of declines.

Officials said the recent reductions were the result of fewer calls caused by faulty telephone lines, and changes in mobile phone design that makes it harder for people to accidentally dial an emergency number.
