13 refugees are reported to have died after their boat collided with a ferry off the Turkish coast.

The coastguard says it happened off western Turkey.

Eight people have been rescued and a search and rescue operation is ongoing.

A further 26 people are missing after an inflatable boat sank off the Greek island of Lesbos.

CEO of UNICEF Peter Power says that people are forgetting the children who are at the heart of this crisis:

Meanwhile, more than 10,000 refugees and migrants entered Austria on Saturday, according to police – as a war of words between Croatia and Hungary continues to escalate.

Many have faced a confusing, exhausting and unpredictable journey after being taken by bus from Serbia to Croatia, over to Hungary, and up to Austria.

Queues in excess of 12 hours were reported at the Hungary-Austria border, with some families becoming separated as coaches became full.

About 5,000 people are passing through Macedonia on a daily basis, making their way through the Balkan states before trying to enter the European Union.

There is a sense of urgency for thousands of refugees, amid fears that the EU will introduce more stringent measures to cope with the influx across its member states next week.

Yesterday, Croatia admitted it has "forced" Hungary to accept migrants by sending buses and trains to the border – and the country's prime minister has vowed this will continue.

His government has been accused of "violating Hungary's sovereignty" with the policy, and of "continuously lying in the face of Hungarians, Croatians, of the EU and its citizens".

Hungary's now building a fence along the border with its EU neighbour. Hungarian government spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs claims Croatia left it with no choice:

Meanwhile, thousands more continue to embark on desperate journeys across the Mediterranean, with the Italian coastguard rescuing 4,343 people from smugglers' boats off the coast of Libya in the space of just 24 hours.
