Mathematicians have done some number crunching which shows that any one playing against Suarez has a one in 2,000 chance of getting bitten by the 27-year-old striker.

Luis Suarez has played 441 matches at senior level. Though he may have scored 260 goals, he's also bitten three opponents, PSV's Otman Bakkal, Chelsea's Branislav Ivanonic and Giorgio Chiellini in the game against Italy.

New Statesman surmises that Suarez will have played a maximum of 6,160 opponents during his career - 11 opponents along with three substitutes. Having bitten three opponents in that time, any opponent of Suarez has about a one in 2,000 chance of getting the same treatment.

The put that in context: there is a one in 10,000 chance of being struck by lightning, a one in 76,000 chance of being killed by a wasp, bee or hornet attack and a one in 700,000 chance of being hit by an asteroid.

With 22,464 inhabitants, and four shark attacks so far in 2014, that works out at one in 2,808 chance if you live in the town, assuming all swim once a year. That is still above the odds a Luis Suarez opponent faces. The record year of attacks, 28 in 2008, would mean the odds are about one in 800. With average somewhere between the two, playing against Suarez is similarly dangerous to swimming in an area known for shark attacks.
