Metro North from Dublin city centre to the airport and Swords looks to be back on the agenda.

The project could cost €2bn to build and is likely to be the centrepiece of the infrastructure investment plan by the coalition, to be announced next week.

Yesterday, the coalition decided to shelve the DART Underground project that would have cost €4bn to build.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) requested to review the DART Underground project in conjunction with the updating of the long term transport strategy for the Greater Dublin area.

The NTA recommended that the project be redesigned "to provide a lower cost technical solution, whilst retaining the required rail connectivity".

Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe said he endorsed the NTA recommendations, and intended to provide funding in the new Capital Plan to progress redesign and planning for the revised project.

In the Dáil this morning, Mr Donohoe was giving nothing away on revising the Metro project.
