Met Éireann is warning of severe frost tonight as the freezing conditions continue.
Temperatures have plummeted since yesterday as a result of a weather system bringing a cold air flow from Scandinavia.
Forecasters say heavy showers are expected to continue tonight in parts of the country and will turn to sleet in places - with snow possible on higher ground.
Temperatures, meanwhile, are expected to be between -1 and +1 degrees overnight with widespread frost.
The cold weather is expected to continue until next weekend.
However, John Eagleton - forecaster with Met Éireann - says next week will bring drier conditions.
"I think it will dry out [after] the showers today," he explained.
"There'll be some activity tomorrow, but not much. Little bit of activity on Sunday, and maybe a little bit on Monday - but after that it looks fairly dry for the mid-week and towards next weekend.
