A paediatrician has been found guilty of poor professional performance over his treatment of a baby boy at South Tipperary General Hospital in 2012.

The child, who was not sent for head cooling treatment after his birth, suffers from cerebral palsy.

Making its ruling this afternoon, the Medical Council found Muhammad Ilyas Khan guilty of six out of seven counts of poor professional performance.

The case relates to a now two-year-old, born at South Tipperary General Hospital in June 2012.

The consultant paediatrician was found guilty on several counts - including that he failed to put in place an adequate treatment plan for the newborn's Hypoxia, or lack of oxygen to the brain.

He was also found to have failed to arrange for the baby's transfer to a neo-natal intensive care unit for head cooling.

The treatment is recommended in the first six hours of life where a baby is deprived of oxygen.

Dr Khan was also found to have told the baby's parents their son was 'fine' where he knew, or ought to have known, that was not the case.

The toddler has cerebral palsy and requires ongoing treatment for a range of disabilities.

In a statement, his parents said they were pleased with the outcome of the inquiry, but added that it would not change their lives.
