Justice Minister Helen McEntee has said Gardaí are doing “everything possible” to determine the cause of a fire in a vacant pub in Ringsend, Co Dublin.

Dublin Fire Brigade said the fire in the former Shipwright pub, also known as Sally’s Bar, started shortly before 2am today, December 31st.

Six fire engines, including a turntable ladder, were involved in bringing the blaze under control at the vacant pub and guesthouse.

Ms McEntee said the fire is currently under investigation by An Garda Síochána.

“If this was the result of a deliberate act, which has not yet been established, the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” she said.

“Arson is a very serious crime which carries heavy prison sentences. No one has the right to cause damage to property, to cause fear or to threaten public order.

“An Garda Síochána are doing everything possible to determine the cause of the fire.”

She encouraged anyone with information to contact Gardaí as soon as possible.

Homeless hub in Ringsend

The vacant pub was to be used by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive to house homeless families, although false rumours emerged it was to be used for asylum seekers.

Protests against using the premises for asylum seekers took place earlier this month.

Dublin Fire Brigade thanked the Ringsend community for their support as they fought the blaze and for providing gifts such as chocolate.

'Shocking news'

Labour Party leader Ivana Bacik said the fire was “shocking news”.

“[It’s] greatly concerning to see reports of fire at this premises in Ringsend which could have provided shelter to homeless families,” she said.

“I want to pay tribute to the courage and dedication of the firefighters who brought the fire under control last night.”

Labour Justice spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin said: "Outrageous that our brave firefighters have to be on the frontline dealing with hate attacks like this."

Green Party Councillor Claire Byrne said the fire was "unbelievably sad".
