The Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring has used up his yearly allowance of alcohol in just seven months.

Lord Mayor Nial Ring has handed out 194 kegs of beer and over €19,000 worth of wine since he took office last June.

120 of the kegs – over 10,000 pints – are donated to the Mansion House by Guinness every year, but this January, the Lord Mayor’s residence requested a boost in stock as it was already running low.

On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Lord Mayor Ring said thousands of people have attended events at the residence in recent months.

“What we are certainly getting up to is making sure that the Mansion House is the house for the people of Dublin – and especially the huge amount of volunteers that are doing great work for football clubs, GAA clubs and homeless charities,” he said.

“What I have done, so far this year, I have had over 16,000 people through the house.”

Tipple

He said most of the alcohol is consumed at evening functions, but admitted there have been a few exceptions.

“We had afternoon events where people have had a little tipple afterwards,” he said.

“For example, I do an afternoon tea for senior citizens once or twice a week now and sometimes they stay back and there is a little bit of a singsong and they might get a pint of two.”

Water and cream crackers

He admitted it might be time to reel it back in a bit.

“I don’t think it can continue so I am going to have to review that situation,” he said.

“As you know, we had three civic receptions this year – one for the Dubs, one for the hockey team and one for Kelly Harrington.

“I said at the time, if this continues we are going to be on glasses of water and cream crackers.”
