Gardai in Mayo are still trying to identify the gender of a person killed in a crash in the early hours of yesterday.

Three lives have already been lost on Irish roads this weekend.

Gardaí investigating the fatal crash in Mayo say the car was engulfed in flames and they're still struggling to identify the deceased.

At around 1.30 yesterday morning, the car was discovered on fire - on the Castlebar to Newport road at Cartoon.

Officers are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the road on Friday night - or who may have information - to contact Westport Garda Station.

The RSA is urging all road users to remain vigilant today.

It's been one of the worst weekends on our roads this year with three lives lost.

Among the dead is a 22 month old toddler from Co. Donegal. The little boy died in what Gardai have described as a tragic accident, in the driveway of his home on Friday evening.

While a 27 year old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a truck on the Ennis Rd in Limerick yesterday morning.
