The high number of people who are married or in relationships on dating apps is leaving singletons “absolutely exhausted”, a leading matchmaker has said.

According to a recent survey, close to two thirds of Tinder users are already in a relationship - something that comes as no surprise to Love HQ founder Mairead Loughman.

“Anyone who comes to me for matchmaking is absolutely exhausted by online dating,” she told Moncrieff

“They’re seeing so many people who are in relationships or married that are on Tinder or on other dating platforms.”

In total, there are some 200,000 Tinders users in Ireland, of whom 50,000 use the app every day.

It all means, singleton often have their work cut out for them.

“If we look at those statistics, there are 130,000 people in Ireland who are on Tinder at the moment… who are married or in a relationship,” Ms Loughman said.

“So, if you are single and looking for love, it’s going to be very difficult.”

Ms Loughman said there are a huge number of reasons why someone might still use a dating app whilst being in a relationship.

“One person might be there for loneliness,” she said.

“One person might be there for sex, one person might be there to see, ‘If I was to leave him or her, what’s the market looking like?’”

Often Tinder users do not even mention that they are in a relationship before they go on a date with someone.

“You could be talking to them for a week or two and then be like, ‘Let’s meet up,’” Ms Loughman said.

“Next thing they might say to you, ‘Actually, I just want to let you know, I’m married.’

“Sometimes it’s that far in, a couple of days, weeks into it.

“You may also need to meet up with them two or three times before you find out what’s going on.”

Globally, there are around 75 million Tinder users.
